Arts Infusion Program
Our cutting-edge arts-infusion program integrates arts into core curriculum in multiple ways:
- Our full-time Artist in Residence collaborates with classroom teachers to plan arts-infused lessons
- Our Art and Music Teachers collaborate with classroom teachers to implement project-based learning units each quarter
- Teachers collaborate with community arts organizations to teach core curriculum through visual arts, music and drama

Annual Events
Our series of annual events celebrate achievement and culture:
- Winter Celebration – student and professional performances, music and festivities
- Cinco de Mayo Celebration – an exposition of music, dance, history, culture and food from various Spanish-speaking countries
- "Let Your Light Shine" – student performances showcasing the culmination of arts projects worked on throughout the year
- Family Fun Day – this end-of-the-year tradition brings family, students and staff together around food, fun and games

Student Support Team
The Student Support Team addresses student issues from a “whole child”, 360 degree perspective. The team includes the Director of School Culture, the Director of Instruction, the School Guidance Counselor, Special Education teachers and Academic Intervention Services teachers. Each member of the team brings an important perspective and approach to addressing both social and academic issues.

After School Program
BLCS offers an arts-infused afterschool program from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

Tutoring
Students struggling in math or reading are offered free tutoring in the afternoon.

Saturday Academies
BLCS provides 16 weeks of Saturday Academies focused on English Language Arts and Math, in preparation for the New York state assessments.

Summer SHINE Academy
Students with the most challenges in math and reading are invited to attend a mandatory summer academy. The summer program features intensive remediation in math and reading, Arts-Infused Afternoons and Field Trip Fridays.

Parallel Math & Literacy Blocks
We offer small-group classes using remedial curricula and strategies to bring struggling students in reading an math up to grade level as quickly possible.
Monthly Town Hall Meetings
Each month, our students come together to build community around our core values and to celebrate academic and social achievements.

BLCS Performance Troupe
Afterschool student group meets weekly to create and perform musical and dramatic performances.

Community Service Projects
Our students participate in projects to improve their school and community. Projects have included cleaning up the local park, performing for senior citizens and beautifying the school.

Monthly Parent Nights
BLCS provides monthly workshops for parents including: “Read with Your Student Night”, “10 Ways to Teach Reading at Home”, “10 Ways to Teach Math at Home”, “Community Resources in the South Bronx” and “Family Health Night”.

Students will participate in a fun, schoolwide event integrating Math and Physical Education.
