**Accepting Student Applications starting February 1, 2010**
Why Metropolitan Lighthouse Charter School?
Preparation for College
- College Focus: It is our job to make college real and attainable for all of our scholars. Beginning as early as Kindergarten, students will learn about colleges and strive to build the skills and knowledge necessary to get them there.
- Arts Infusion: We will infuse art activities and techniques into the teaching of all of our core subjects.
- More Time on Instruction: To ensure that every child masters the work necessary to prepare them for college, MetLCS will provide more time on task with a longer school year (190 instructional days) and a longer school day (8 hours).
Small School Environment
- Social Curriculum and SHINE: We believe the social curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum. The set of qualities (social skills and character traits) that all children need in order to be successful will be included in our SHINE Character Education Program: Self-Discipline, Humility, Intelligence, Nobility and Excellence (SHINE).
- Looping: Students and teachers will stay together for two years, starting in first grade and continuing through eighth grade. For example, a student’s first grade teacher will also teach his/her 2nd grade class.
- Family and School Connections: We will offer parent meetings and conferences to bring parents into the school community to support the academic and social development of their students.
