Our Community Arts Partner is South Shore Arts. They instruct students in theatre and music as well as plan collaboratively with classroom teachers. This year, the after school programs they offer are choir and African dance.

Extra-curricular activities include student council, art club, Latin dance club, choir, basketball, volleyball, and African dance. New extra-curriculars are added every year.

All students receive small group instruction during the after noon intervention block. Technology is integrated in classrooms. Recent student projects included creating a PowerPoint presentation and recording a video commercial.

We received a $5,000 grant from the Foundations of East Chicago for our parent resource center. The center features a computer for parent use, books, educational games, videos, and magazines for parents to check out and use at home.

Monthly town hall meetings feature guest speakers from the community and celebrate students’ academic success with awards given to the class with the highest math average and the class that read the most minutes.

Our school was featured on the Lakeshore Evening News, “In Our Schools Today” cable program, and in Convergence Magazine and The Times.

Community members and parents participated in Read Across America Day by reading aloud to students.

We offer Monthly Family Education Nights held with topics ranging from preparing students for standardized tests, preparing for college, reading strategies that work, and arts activities to increase engagement. Family literacy night and family math night are very popular events.

Our 3rd - 5th graders participated in the Indiana Charter School State-wide Spelling Bee. Fourth grade students attend leadership camp at Camp Tecumseh.

We have partnerships with Junior Achievement, East Chicago Boys & Girls Club, South Shore Arts, Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, Lubeznik Center for the Arts, and the East Chicago Arts Initiative .
