Bronzeville Lighthouse Charter School recognized as one of top ten most improved elementary schools in Illinois

Bronzeville Lighthouse Charter School (BZLCS) was recognized on the Illinois State Honor Roll for the second year in a row. Last year, BZLCS was 1 of 147 schools recognized in the category of Academic Improvement. This year, they are 1 of 93 in the same category. BZLCS is also one of the top ten most improved elementary schools in the state of Illinois.

Over the past 4 years, BZLCS has grown from 52% proficiency to 75% proficiency on the state test. BZLCS prepares their scholars for success through multiple avenues. One of the programs that has proven to be most successful is Targeted Instruction Hour (TIH), where teachers align the state standards to the curriculum and student needs to provide instruction. During this hour every child participates in a small group reading class, which is differentiated based on the scholars’ individual instructional levels. Additionally, the teachers participate in 20+ days of professional development per academic school year. BZLCS believes that putting high quality teachers in front of every single child and differentiating instruction to meet all learners will yield excellent results, closing the achievement gap.

BZLCS is located at 8 W. Root Street in Chicago and serves grades Kindergarten through 8.  The school is part of the Lighthouse Academies national network.  Lighthouse Academies, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that develops and supports the operations of public charter schools in underserved communities throughout the United States.  LHA distinguishes itself as a charter management organization (CMO) using an arts-infused, K-12 college prep program funded solely on per pupil revenue to achieve its mission.  LHA is the only CMO that offers a truly replicable, K-12, multi-state model.
